Walking By the Spirit

(V1A16)

In his letter to the Galatians, the Apostle Paul presents a compelling exposition on living a life guided by the Holy Spirit, contrasting it sharply with a life governed by the flesh. This profound message, encapsulated in Galatians 5:16-25, offers both a warning and an encouragement, outlining not only the consequences of yielding to earthly desires but also the blessings of following the Spirit. Here, I delve into what it means to “walk by the Spirit” and how it shapes the life of a believer.

The Battle Within

Paul begins by laying out the internal conflict every believer faces: the desires of the flesh versus the desires of the Spirit. These two forces are fundamentally opposed, each pulling in a different direction. The “flesh” in Pauline terms refers to more than just the physical body; it encompasses a broader range of human nature prone to sin and opposed to God’s laws. Walking by the Spirit, then, means rejecting these base instincts and instead, embracing the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

Freedom from the Law

One of the most revolutionary aspects of Paul’s teaching is the idea that those led by the Spirit are “not under the law.” This is not an invitation to lawlessness; rather, it signifies that the Spirit enables believers to meet the righteous requirements of the law through a transformed heart and mind. Where the law highlights sin, the Spirit empowers individuals to overcome it, thus fulfilling the law’s true purpose.

Works of the Flesh vs. Fruit of the Spirit

Paul provides a stark list of behaviors that characterize life according to the flesh, including “fornication, impurity, licentiousness, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife,” and more. These are contrasted with the “fruit of the Spirit” — qualities such as “love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.” Importantly, these are not individual achievements but the natural product of a life yielded to the Holy Spirit.

Living and Walking by the Spirit

“Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.” This metaphor of crucifixion signifies a definitive break with the past: a total renunciation of former ways. For Paul, this is not a mere philosophical shift but a daily, active choice to deny the flesh and its desires.

The phrase “If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit” encapsulates the essence of Paul’s message. It is not enough to live by the Spirit in a passive sense; it must be an active, continual choice to walk in step with the Spirit’s promptings. This involves constant vigilance and commitment, characterized by humility, love, and a refusal to provoke or envy others.

Practical Implications for Believers

Walking in the Spirit is transformative, affecting every aspect of a believer’s life. It changes how individuals respond to challenges, interact with others, and make decisions. It fosters a community of believers who exhibit the fruit of the Spirit, thereby testifying to the power of the divine life within them.

Paul’s discourse in Galatians 5:16-25 calls believers to a higher standard of living that is not bound by the letter of the law but is driven by the Spirit. This spiritual walk is marked by moral integrity, love, and a deep-seated peace, offering a fulfilling path that leads to eternal life. As we endeavor to walk by the Spirit, we are invited to participate in the divine nature, escaping the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire and instead bearing the beautiful fruit of spiritual maturity.
